Visit Marathon With Kids

A day at the Archaeological Site of Marathon and a Farm

The battle of Marathon was a pivotal moment in the history of Greece: the outnumbered Athenians defeated the first invasion by the Persian army in 490 BC and set the stage for a century of splendor and Greek innovation in politics, philosophy, art, theatre, and culture. At Marathon, you will have the chance to visit the Tumulus of the Athenians that shelters the bodies of some two-hundred soldiers who fell in the battle of Marathon, as well as the replica of the trophy of Marathon erected to commemorate their win.

Next stop is the “Marathon Run Museum”, with over 4000 exhibits that record the history of the Marathon race from 1896 until today that commemorates the run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, the messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens.

You will continue to the Marathon Dam and Lake constructed between 1926 and 1929. Until 1959 it was the sole supplier of water to Athens and it is often cited for its role in the modernization of Greece and the first recorded case of seismic activity associated with reservoir inundation. It was also designed to be symbolic of Ancient Greece, particularly Athenians and the Battle of Marathon.

Now it is the time to relax and play with nature and animals in the farm of an extraordinary Attica winery. Set amongst rolling hills in an area of natural beauty, the estate, the olive grove, the organic vegetable garden and the petting farm, offer an opportunity for families to come together and reconnect with nature.

Children will have the chance to care for and feed the farm animals, ponies, rabbits, chickens & ducks; explore our organic vegetable garden, pick vegetables and plant seeds; play in the children’s garden and make crafts using natural materials (sensory play, crafts & seasonal activities).

Add-ons:

  • Snack pack during the tour
  • Guided tour of the vineyard, winery and cellar, wine tasting of 6 wines for adults
  • Lunch in the estate
  • Visit a folkloric museum and the international museum of bread
