Family hiking in the paths of King Nestor
Bird-watching, swimming and hiking in the mythical land of Ancient Pylos
In this family hiking in Navarino, you will have the chance to cherish the most beautiful views of Messinia; the Gulf of Navarino, the Gialova lagoon, Voidokilia beach, the island of Sfaktiria from up the Paleokastro Hill.
Starting from the beach of Divari that stretches at the rim of the Gulf of Navarino, you will follow the flat path around the lagoon that will give you the opportunity to observe its ecosystem and receive knowledge and information about this unique and sensitive natural environment.
You will reach the beautiful beach of Voidokoilia, imprinted on travel magazine covers as one of the best places to visit in Greece. Its name signifies the belly of the ox, the same as “Voufrada”, as referred to by Homer in his epic poems, Iliad and Odyssey. It is sandy and shallow, so you won’t miss the opportunity for a swim in its turquoise waters.
You will carry on uphill to the peninsula of Koryfasio. You will ascend the dunes, continue through the amaranths to the cave of Nestor, the mythical king of Pylos and you may trace the remains of ancient walls in the water, serving as -nothing more than- speculations for the location of the port of Ancient Kingdom of Pylos.
At the top of the hill, you will discover the medieval castle of Paleokastro whose strategic location made it a valuable trophy for every conqueror over time. At this point, you will be between four water complexes enjoying the panoramic view of the Ionian Sea, the lagoon of Gialova, the beach of Voidokilia and the bay of Navarino. The best place for a pic nic!
